Biography

Dr. Christopher Blaha is Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at The ÈÕº«¹ú²úav¸£Àû of Akron. He earned his Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music degrees in tuba performance from the ÈÕº«¹ú²úav¸£Àû of Michigan, studying with Fritz Kaenzig, and his Bachelor of Music from The Ohio State ÈÕº«¹ú²úav¸£Àû, where he studied with James Akins. His additional teachers include Craig Knox, Wes Jacobs, Marianne Ploger, Ron Bishop, and Gary Tirey.

Before joining the faculty at Akron, Dr. Blaha served as Assistant Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at Appalachian State ÈÕº«¹ú²úav¸£Àû (2009–2014). His former students perform with United States military bands, teach in public schools, and pursue graduate study across the country.

From 2004–2008, Dr. Blaha was Principal Tuba of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra and also performed with ensembles including the Pittsburgh Symphony, Buffalo Philharmonic, Grant Park Music Festival, Toledo Symphony, Charlotte Symphony, Detroit Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic, Cincinnati Symphony, Ann Arbor Symphony, and Columbus Symphony. While in Charleston, he also taught at Charleston Southern ÈÕº«¹ú²úav¸£Àû and Armstrong Atlantic State ÈÕº«¹ú²úav¸£Àû and was active as a guest artist and clinician.

Dr. Blaha is a Buffet Crampon Performing Artist.
