'Shakespeare in the Spring' event is April 22

“Happy Birthday Shakespeare” will be the theme of the 2010 Shakespeare in the Spring event, sponsored by The ÈÕº«¹ú²úav¸£Àû of Akron Department of English. This event, which is free and open to the public, will take place on Thursday, April 22 at the Martin ÈÕº«¹ú²úav¸£Àû Center, 105 Fir Hill.

A performance session will begin at 3:30 p.m., led by UA theater arts professor Susan Speers, with local actors performing selected scenes from Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew.”

At 5 p.m., the lecture “Shakespeare’s Revolution, or the Truth Unveiled by Time” will be delivered by Scott Maisano, professor of English at the ÈÕº«¹ú²úav¸£Àû of Massachusetts, Boston.

Immediately following the lecture will be the Shakespeare Essay Prize Contest awards ceremony, at which two top prizes — one graduate and one undergraduate — and two honorable mentions will be awarded for papers written on Shakespeare for UA English department courses.

A Shakespeare gala birthday party with hors d’oeuvres and birthday cake will cap off the event.
